While scanning the ads for “gold buyers” I find incentives to sell gold such as “we pay 5% more to seniors”, “get an extra $25 for $250 of gold you sell to us” and my favorite, “we will beat the price on any written offer”.

How do “the best prices paid” gold buying companies have room to give you an extra 10% or even an extra 5%?

How do “best prices paid” gold buying companies have the money for expensive TV and newspaper advertising?

How do “best prices paid” gold buying companies open an office in every town?

Why do you have to have a written offer from some other gold buying company to have the price beat?

Life in the “Real World”

As summer is ending and school is about to begin again I have been reflecting on my last three months of working in the “real world”. Although it has been just a brief insight into what my future holds the reality of growing up has started to settle in.

Even though I will only be going into my sophomore year of college I know how fast these next three years will fly by. As thankful as I am that I have a few more years before I am completely on my own I wonder if the job market will be any better when I graduate, or if I will end up continuing on to graduate school giving me a few extra years before having to be thrown out into the “real world” for good. As a fashion merchandising student I aspire to be living in a fashion centered city such as New York City or LA, and hope to be a buyer for a big name company. I know this is a big dream, but I also know I am capable of achieving it, and I hope to be able to do so as soon as I can get my foot in the door.

Working at Scottsdale Fine Jewelers this summer has given me some experience in the retail side of the industry. I never thought that I would gain so much useful knowledge working here this summer, and I am so thankful that I took advantage of the opportunity. From learning to recognize a designer’s piece just by looking at the style of it, to understanding the vocabulary of the industry, this job has given me a leg up on reaching my career goals. The most important thing I learned in my three months here however is the importance of customer service. This value is something I will always remember as I continue on my career path.

So as I say goodbye to my summer break I am returning to school a little closer to life in the “real world”.

A women came into the store today looking to repair a gold chain bracelet which she claimed to never wear. After realizing how much this complicated repair would be costing her, she decided to sell it to get what its weight in gold was worth. This women walked out very happy with a nice check in her purse, and will probably never miss this bracelet or even think about it again. With gold prices at an all time high now is the time to clean out the jewelery boxes ladies. It came to me the other day that jewelry should not be considered just an accessory. Jewelry has a longer life in the fashion cycle than clothing does, so why has it become the less important of the two? The emphasis on clothing trends has over powered the jewelry industry for too long. Jewelry is what truly makes an outfit your own so it is time to think about buying your clothing to match your jewelry instead of the other way around. This interesting philosophy is one I know may seen a little out there at first, however after thinking about it the idea of jewelry being more dominant, it really does make perfect sense since we tend to buy clothing more often than we do jewelry. Next time you are shopping for a new dress think about your favorite pieces of jewelry back home, or even better bring them along with you shopping to be able to perfectly accessorize them with a new outfit.
